IPC 7711/7721 - Rework, Modification & Repair of Electronics Assemblies

IPC 7711/7721 – Rework, Modification & Repair of Electronics Assemblies is the industry standard for performing modifications and repairs to electronic assemblies.

This course covers rework, repair, and modification methodology and technique for electronics components. This course is split up into 9 modules:
  • Module 1: Introduction/IPC Policies & Procedures
  • Module 2: Wire Splicing
  • Module 3: Through-Hole Components
  • Module 4: Chip & MELF Components
  • Module 5: Gull Wing Components
  • Module 6: J-Lead Components
  • Module 7: PCB Circuit Repair
  • Module 8: Laminate Repair
  • Module 9: Conformal Coating

Each module is followed by a lab period where the student is given practical exercises and the opportunity to leverage the 7711/7721 processes. On the final day, a written exam tests the student’s ability to use the document.

After a successful course completion, the student will be certified to perform rework and modification procedures under contracts requiring IPC 7711/7721 certification.

Certification is portable and is valid for two years. The certificate received by the student is a valid certificate which is traceable to a Master IPC Trainer.

Before certification expires, the student must either return for a retraining class or challenge test.

Topics
  • Product classifications, skill levels, tools and materials
  • Basic surface mount and through hole component removal
  • Land preparation and component installation
  • Primary heating methods: conductive, convective an others
  • Handling electronic assemblies
  • Wire splicing procedures
  • Through hole component removal and installation
  • Chip and MELF rework procedures
  • SOIC/SOT, J-lead and QFP rework
  • Printed wiring board circuit and laminate repair
  • Conformal coating removal

Training Levels

  • Certified IPC Specialist (CIS)
This level of training is designed for students who will be performing modifications to hardware or inspecting hardware repaired to the IPC 7711/7721. Primarily this applies to Operators, Inspectors, and Technicians. However, it may also apply to Engineers, Quality Personnel, Auditors, or any other position which may incorporate the document.

Course Length
  • Initial Certification: 40 Hours / 5 Days
  • Recertification: 16 Hours / 2 Days

Challenge Testing: Available only for CIS upon demand. Please contact our registrar to schedule a challenge test.
